Site Overview

Gab Gab II, also known as Gab Gab Deep, is a small wreck and artificial reef site located just offshore from Gab Gab Beach in Apra Harbor. The site features a sunken structure that has become heavily colonized by marine life, creating a productive artificial reef that attracts a variety of species including pipefish, batfish, moray eels, and lionfish. The gently sloping bottom transitions from sandy patches to coral-covered reef, providing diverse habitat for both large and small marine species. The site is particularly good for macro photography, with well-camouflaged scorpionfish, nudibranchs, and various shrimp species inhabiting the reef structure. The shallow depth and protected location within the harbor make this an excellent training site and a good complement to the nearby Gab Gab Beach macro site. Batfish are reliably encountered around the wreck structure, often approaching divers with curiosity. The site is accessible as a shore dive and can be combined with Gab Gab Beach for a productive multi-site diving day. Visibility is typically good, ranging from 10 to 25 metres depending on conditions. The artificial reef structure has been in place for several decades, allowing extensive coral colonization that has transformed the metal framework into a thriving underwater ecosystem supporting hundreds of marine species. The site also provides valuable habitat for juvenile fish that use the complex structure as a nursery area.

Dive Briefing

"Enter from the designated shore entry point near Gab Gab Beach and swim out to the artificial reef structure at approximately 8 to 12 metres. The sunken structure is covered in soft corals and sponges, providing habitat for pipefish, batfish, and moray eels. Work your way around the structure slowly, scanning for camouflaged scorpionfish on the surrounding reef and pipefish hovering near the soft coral colonies. Batfish are often encountered in small groups around the wreck and are generally curious and approachable. The sandy areas between reef patches host jawfish and garden eels. Maximum depth is approximately 20 metres, allowing extended bottom times. Maintain good buoyancy to avoid stirring the sandy bottom and to protect the coral encrustation on the structure. Exit via the same shore entry, being mindful of any surge near the rocks. The surrounding sandy areas between the reef and shore host garden eel colonies and occasional stingrays resting on the bottom. Take time to scan the open sand patches as you transit between the main structure and the shore entry point."
