Western Shoals – Piti Bay & Western Shoals

Site Overview

Western Shoals is an offshore pinnacle and wall system that rises from deep water to within metres of the surface, creating a dramatic underwater seamount that attracts pelagic species from the surrounding open ocean. The pinnacle features excellent visibility frequently exceeding 40 metres in the clear Pacific water, with large sea fans and soft coral colonies covering the current-facing surfaces. Schools of barracuda form massive spinning formations above the pinnacle, while tuna and the occasional sailfish patrol the blue water beyond the reef edge. Grey reef sharks cruise the deeper wall sections, and large groupers inhabit the crevices and overhangs along the pinnacle face. The wall drops from approximately 12 metres to beyond 40 metres, providing a varied depth profile suitable for multi-level diving. The offshore location ensures pristine water quality and minimal disturbance, creating an environment where marine life thrives in abundance. This is an advanced dive site due to the depth, current, and offshore location, but rewards experienced divers with some of the most spectacular pelagic encounters and dramatic topography available on Guam. The pinnacle also serves as an important reference point for marine researchers studying pelagic species migration patterns and reef health indicators in the open ocean environment surrounding Guam.
