Þingvellir National Park sits on the rift where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart, and it is the spiritual home of Icelandic diving. The park’s signature site, Silfra, is a fissure filled with glacial meltwater filtered through lava for decades, delivering visibility that can exceed 100 metres. Divers float between two continents in water so pure it is safe to drink. Beyond Silfra, quieter fissures such as Davíðsgjá, Flosagjá and Nikulásargjá offer the same gin-clear water with fewer crowds and more challenging navigation. The landscape is dramatic lava rock covered in neon-green troll-hair algae, and the sense of drifting through a prehistoric crack is unforgettable. Diving here is cold, technical and drysuit-only, but the reward is the clearest freshwater on Earth and a bucket-list experience unlike anywhere else.
