    Site Overview

Eskifjörður, a quiet Eastfjords village, scatters the remnants of old Norwegian whaling ships and herring vessels through its fjord at 10 to 30 metres, now thriving artificial reefs. The wrecks are encrusted with anemones and home to Atlantic wolffish, cod and a wealth of nudibranchs and macro life, making Eskifjörður a satisfying intermediate wreck dive for drysuit divers. A short boat ride from the harbour puts you on the sites, and mild current is the main consideration. For divers exploring East Iceland, Eskifjörður pairs history with productivity and is a more accessible, macro-focused companion to the famous El Grillo. With a local guide managing timing and the wreck positions, it is a fishy, photographic cold-water wreck experience. The site is a rewarding but demanding cold-water dive that rewards preparation, good buoyancy and respect for the Icelandic environment. Dive Briefing

"Meet your operator in Eskifjörður and kit up on the boat. The short ride reaches the wrecks; descend to the nearest hull and orbit it, watching for wolffish in the structure and cod around the beams. Anemones and nudibranchs coat the metal, so a slow tour with a macro eye is rewarding. There is mild current, so swim into it on exit. Only trained technical divers enter the wrecks; others stay outside. Water is 3 to 10°C, so monitor warmth. Complete a safety stop and signal the boat. The operator times the dive to the calmest window and marks the wrecks. Follow your guide closely, monitor your thermal comfort and ascend with a safety stop before exiting at the designated point. Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Eskifjörður suits intermediate to advanced drysuit divers who enjoy wreck and macro life without deep technical demands. It is great for photography and for travellers in East Iceland. Penetration is for trained tech divers only; others tour the exteriors safely. It is less dramatic than El Grillo but more accessible and rich in critters, and a guide makes the mild-current site comfortable and productive. It suits confident cold-water divers who value unique geology and pristine conditions over abundant tropical marine life.
