    Site Overview

The Hvítá river’s summer plunge pools offer crystal-clear glacial water for shallow scuba training and snorkelling, mainly in the calmest summer conditions. The river is famous for Gullfoss and the Golden Circle, and a few clear pools allow a taste of glacial diving, though strong currents mean scuba is limited to the calmest, most sheltered spots. Water is 2 to 6°C and a drysuit is mandatory, with excellent clarity but glacial flour that can silt quickly. The site is more snorkel than scuba, but for confident divers with a guide it is a novel, icy freshwater experience in a spectacular setting. For travellers on the Golden Circle, the Hvítá pools add an adventurous, cold-water dimension to the classic sightseeing route. The site is a rewarding but demanding cold-water dive that rewards preparation, good buoyancy and respect for the Icelandic environment. Dive Briefing

"Meet your guide at the Hvítá access and kit up carefully at the river’s edge. Enter only into the calmest, most sheltered plunge pool; descend gently and control your fins absolutely to avoid silting the clear water. The current is strong in the main flow, so stay in the eddy and never drift into the fast water. Watch for char and algae in the pool. Water is 2 to 6°C, so monitor warmth and dexterity. Ascend quickly if you feel the current, complete a safety stop and exit at the entry. A local guide manages the entry and the safe pool; snorkelling is the main activity here. Follow your guide closely, monitor your thermal comfort and ascend with a safety stop before exiting at the designated point. Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Hvítá pools suit confident drysuit divers who want a novel glacial river experience, but scuba is limited to calm pools and the site is mainly snorkelling. It is good for adventurous travellers and buoyancy practice, with a guide essential for the strong current. Not for beginners or those uncomfortable in cold, fast water. For qualified cold-water divers it is a unique Golden Circle add-on, guided and conditions-dependent. It suits confident cold-water divers who value unique geology and pristine conditions over abundant tropical marine life.
