Site Overview

Vestmannaeyjar, the Westman Islands, is one of Iceland’s most dramatic ocean diving destinations. The 1973 Eldfell eruption created new black lava flows underwater, and sites such as Sæfell Wall, Laxa Gorge and the Sólmundarhöfði crystal caves offer spectacular lava formations, caves and swim-throughs with incredible light effects. Kelp forests, massive Atlantic cod, wolffish and the chance of grey seals make the islands rich in life. Water is 4 to 11°C and a drysuit is mandatory, with moderate current and swell demanding respect and a local operator. Reached by ferry from the mainland, Vestmannaeyjar is for adventurous divers who want volcanic underwater landscapes and abundant North Atlantic life, guided and managed for safety in an exposed setting.
