Clare’s Loop Head and Liscannor coastline is dramatic and varied, from the Cliffs of Moher plunging underwater to the Aran Islands’ gin-clear fissures. The Cliffs of Moher offer wall diving with plumose anemones, soft corals and puffins above, while Loop Head adds sea caves, grey seals and the chance of summer sunfish. The Aran Islands feature Poll na bPéist (the Wormhole), Bráthair Cliff and underwater caves in exceptionally clear water, with dolphins and basking sharks. Liscannor Bay is a gentle training ground with dogfish and cuttlefish. Exposed but accessible, Clare is a highlight of any Irish diving trip. The region rewards careful planning and a drysuit, and its sites suit a range of cold-water experience levels.

Getting There

Fly into Shannon (SNN) and drive the Loop Head and Wild Atlantic Way. Dive bases sit in Kilkee, Lahinch and Doolin, with boats to the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher.
