Eel Garden - Jordan Diving

Site Overview

Eel Garden is one of Aqaba's most distinctive dive sites featuring a gently sloping sandy bottom populated by hundreds of garden eels Heteroconger hassi that extend their slender bodies from burrows in the sand creating an enchanting underwater garden effect. The site extends from eight to twenty metres depth with the eel colonies concentrated in the ten to fifteen metre zone where the sandy substrate provides ideal burrowing conditions. Beyond the garden eels the site supports blue spotted stingrays that glide across the sand surface hunting for buried crustaceans and flying gurnards that display their spectacular wing like pectoral fins when disturbed. Small reef patches scattered across the sandy slope provide habitat diversity with anemonefish butterflyfish and moray eels adding colour and structure to the predominantly sand dominated environment. The gentle slope and minimal current make Eel Garden an excellent site for training dives night diving and underwater photography in comfortable conditions. The site represents one of Jordan and the Red Sea most compelling underwater destinations combining rich marine biodiversity with the distinctive geological and cultural heritage.
