    About Canterbury & Banks Peninsula

Canterbury and Banks Peninsula offer diverse diving from marine reserves to sheltered harbours around the South Island's largest city. The Pohatu Marine Reserve at Flea Bay on Banks Peninsula features clear waters, kelp forests, yellow-eyed penguins swimming underwater, and New Zealand fur seals in a spectacular volcanic landscape. Akaroa Harbour provides calm, sheltered diving with pipefish, seahorses, stingrays, and excellent macro opportunities, with the added bonus of Hector's dolphins often visible at the surface. Lyttelton Harbour holds several smaller wrecks including Dredge 350 and the Torpedo Boat 191, along with excellent macro diving among sponges and nudibranchs. The offshore Pinnacles in Pegasus Bay deliver limestone formations at 15 to 30 metres with large schools of blue cod, wrasse, and occasional seal encounters for advanced boat divers. Christchurch, the South Island's largest city, provides excellent infrastructure and an international airport, making this region a convenient gateway to South Island diving.
