About Kayangel Atoll (Northern Reef)

Kayangel is Palau's only true atoll, sitting far to the north and offering some of the clearest, least-dived water in the country. Its eastern rim drops into a dramatic wall where barracuda, tuna, grey reef sharks, and occasional manta and eagle rays cruise the blue, while the Kayangel North Channel funnels strong currents packed with pelagics. Inside the atoll, the calm lagoon is a gentle wonderland of coral gardens, giant clams, turtles, and macro life that is perfect for training and night dives. The submerged seamount of Ngaruangl Reef to the south holds pristine hard corals, resident groupers, and seasonal whale sharks. Because Kayangel is a long run from Koror, it is best reached on extended liveaboard trips, and its remoteness means healthy, untouched reefs and a genuine sense of expedition diving.

Getting There

The Kayangel Atoll (Northern Reef) region is reached by boat from Koror, the dive hub of Palau. Day boats and liveaboards depart the Koror and Malakal marinas, with transit times varying by site. Some southern and northern regions are best experienced on multi-day liveaboard trips that time dives to the tidal windows.
