About Anse La Raye & the Central West Coast

Halfway between the busy north and the Piton south, the central west coast is Saint Lucia's quiet diving address - three sites on a banana-growing shoreline that most tour boats pass by, and between them the finest pure wall dive on the island. The Anse La Raye Wall simply leaves: a shelf at 8 metres drops to 25 and then keeps going, furred in sea whips, gorgonians and soft coral, with feather dusters thick as fence posts and a drift along it that reads like a much grander coast. In sharp contrast, Rosemond's Trench is a 10-metre dive into a geological fault - a miniature canyon system where guides turn over the secrets: seahorses, frogfish and an almost absurd density of small life that has made it the island's photography workshop. Anse Galet's coral heads finish the trio as the friendliest shallow reef on the west side, good for beginners, snorkellers and families between boat trips. Add the fishing-village charm of Anse La Raye itself - the island's most authentic village, and home of the Friday night fish fry to beat Gros Islet for food alone - and this thin slice of coast earns a full multi-day place on any serious itinerary.

    Getting There

The central coast sits at the midpoint of the west-coast road - about 50 minutes from George F.L. Charles (SLU) airport in the north and an hour from Hewanorra (UVF) in the south, with Castries 25 minutes north and Soufrière 35 minutes south. Boats launch from Anse La Raye bay itself and from the Laboragne front near Windjammer Landing, reaching the Wall and the Trench in five to ten minutes; Anse Galet is a short paddle from the sand. Most northern and southern operators include the central coast as a day trip, and Windjammer Landing runs dives off its own jetty.

    Local Transport

The west-coast road connects every site directly - self-drive divers link Anse La Raye, Anse Galet and the Soufrière Road in minutes, Regional minibuses run the coast all day, flagging down anywhere along the banana-loaded shoulder, Operators in both Castries and Soufrière include transfers on central-coast trip days
