Diving & Travel Guide to KwaZulu-Natal – iSimangaliso & Sodwana Bay
About KwaZulu-Natal – iSimangaliso & Sodwana Bay
Sodwana Bay within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site hosts the southernmost coral reefs in Africa and offers South Africa's most spectacular tropical diving. The reef system stretches from the shallow beginner-friendly Quarter Mile Reef to the advanced 9-Mile Reef with pristine coral communities, green turtles, tiger sharks, and giant humphead wrasse. The famous 5-Mile Reef features the Bikini section with its chain moray eel colony and winter ragged-tooth shark visits, while 7-Mile Reef delivers sheer drop-offs with hammerheads, manta rays, and marlin encounters. The system includes over eleven distinct dive sites from shallow snorkelling reefs to deep advanced walls, all within a UNESCO World Heritage marine protected area. Beyond Sodwana, the remote Mabibi and Lala Nek reefs offer virtually untouched coral environments, while Kosi Bay features extraordinary Zambezi bull shark aggregations in its estuary mouth. With warm tropical water, exceptional visibility, and extraordinary biodiversity, Sodwana Bay is South Africa's coral reef diving capital.
