Northern Reefs – Sudan Red Sea Diving
About Northern Reefs
The Northern Reefs extend from Port Sudan toward the Egyptian border, encompassing some of the least-explored diving territory in the entire Red Sea. This remote region includes Gezira Seghir, an isolated sandy cay with turtle nesting beaches and leopard sharks on sand patches, Shab Darraka's deep-wall drift diving with hammerheads at dawn, Hummam's outstanding macro life with blue-spotted stingrays and night diving opportunities, and Wadi Gimal North where occasional liveaboard extensions from Egyptian waters cross into Sudan to find silky sharks and large dogtooth tuna. The northern reefs benefit from extremely low diving pressure, with some sites receiving fewer than a dozen divers per year. Coral health is exceptional and marine life behaviour remains natural and unhabituated to divers, creating encounters of extraordinary intimacy. The proximity to the Egyptian border means some liveaboards operating from Marsa Alam or Sharm El Sheikh extend their itineraries south into Sudanese waters, offering a rare combination of Egyptian and Sudanese Red Sea diving in a single expedition.
