Port Sudan is the gateway to the Sudanese Red Sea and the departure point for most liveaboard expeditions to the country's legendary offshore reefs. The nearshore waters offer surprisingly rewarding diving for those who extend their stay, with the world-renowned Umbria wreck on Wingate Reef, productive macro sites at Darraka and Masamirit, and healthy coral gardens at Towartit Reef and Harvey Reef. The Umbria alone justifies the journey as one of the finest wreck dives on Earth, a 153-metre Italian freighter scuttled in 1940 with its cargo of bombs, vehicles, and wine bottles perfectly preserved in crystal-clear Red Sea water. Beyond the wrecks, the nearshore reefs support seahorses, frogfish, ghost pipefish, and green turtles in waters that see a fraction of the diver traffic found further north in Egypt. Port Sudan itself retains a fascinating old-world Red Sea port atmosphere with Ottoman and British colonial architecture, bustling fish markets, and warm Sudanese hospitality.

Getting There

Port Sudan is served by Port Sudan New International Airport (PZU) with connections from Khartoum, Jeddah, and Cairo. Most divers arrive by air from Cairo or Jeddah and transfer directly to their liveaboard vessel in Port Sudan harbour. Some operators offer charter flights from Sharm El Sheikh during peak season. Overland travel from Khartoum takes approximately 12 hours by bus or can be flown in one hour. Visa arrangements must be completed in advance through the Sudanese embassy.
