About Sanganeb Atoll

Sanganeb Atoll is the crown jewel of Sudanese diving and one of the most iconic reef systems in the Red Sea. Rising from abyssal depths as an isolated seamount, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is crowned by a lone British lighthouse that has guided ships since 1906. The atoll features sheer vertical walls dropping hundreds of metres, underwater caves, natural arches, and plateaus that attract extraordinary concentrations of pelagic life. Scalloped hammerhead sharks school in their hundreds during winter months, grey reef sharks patrol every wall, silvertip sharks cruise the blue, and barracuda form massive tornadoes above the reef. The South Plateau cleaning station offers close encounters with hammerheads in the early morning, while the North Plateau caves shelter whitetip reef sharks and glassfish swarms. The Arch provides one of the most photographed swim-through formations in the Red Sea. Sanganeb is accessed exclusively by liveaboard and represents the pinnacle of Sudanese diving, offering world-class encounters that rival the Galapagos and Cocos Island.

Getting There

Sanganeb Atoll is reached exclusively by liveaboard vessel departing from Port Sudan harbour. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours depending on sea conditions. Most 7-14 day Sudan liveaboard itineraries include 2-3 days at Sanganeb as a highlight of the trip. No shore facilities exist on the atoll as it is a protected marine park with only the lighthouse structure above water.
