Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city and primary international gateway, offers surprisingly accessible diving in the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve with uninhabited island reefs, artificial wreck sites, and productive macro locations. Mbudya and Bongoyo Islands provide fringing reef diving with turtles and rays just 20-25 minutes by boat from the city. The Fungu Yasin Wrecks feature several scuttled vessels including a large dredger at 18 to 30 metres creating thriving artificial reef habitats. Msasani Bay offers shore-accessible night diving with frogfish and seahorses. Further afield, Pangani delivers seasonal whale shark encounters from October to February at river-mouth dives, while Bagamoyo combines shallow diving with the historic Kaole ruins. Saadani National Park uniquely combines offshore coral diving with safari game drives where the beach meets the bush. Getting There

Dar es Salaam is served by Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) with extensive international connections. The city is the primary entry point for all Tanzanian diving destinations. Dive boats depart from the Msasani Peninsula and Kunduchi areas with 20-40 minute transfers to the marine reserve islands. Pangani is 4 hours north by road, Bagamoyo 1.5 hours, and Saadani 4 hours. Ferries to Zanzibar depart daily from the Dar es Salaam harbour.
