The Tanga and Northern Mainland coast offers some of Tanzania's most dramatic and under-dived reef systems, from the coral cliffs of Mnazi Bay to the spectacular deep walls and swim-throughs of Toten Island. The region features the Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park protecting hawksbill turtle habitats and potential dugong sightings. Nyuli Reef delivers massive gorgonian-covered walls with strong tidal drift and pelagic encounters, while Yambe Island offers barracuda and jack schools on fringing walls. The WWI wrecks around Tanga add unique historical interest with remnants of German and British vessels from the 1914-15 East African campaign. The region remains one of Tanzania's best-kept diving secrets, receiving minimal tourist traffic while offering world-class wall diving and exceptional coral health. The Amboni Caves, the largest limestone cave system in East Africa, and the nearby Usambara Mountains provide outstanding topside attractions complementing the underwater experiences.

Getting There

Tanga is accessed by road from Dar es Salaam (5 hours) or by light aircraft to Tanga Airport (TGT). The coastal road is paved and the drive passes through scenic countryside. Some dive operators offer transfers from Dar es Salaam. The northern mainland sites around Mtwara are further south, requiring additional road travel. Most dive sites are reached by boat from Tanga or Pangani harbours with 15-25 minute transfers.
