Regional Diversity
Diving in the Dominican Republic is a year-round activity, but the best time depends on your specific interests. The peak season for general diving is from December to May, during the dry season, when visibility is at its best and the weather is sunny and pleasant. This also coincides with the legendary Humpback Whale season at the Silver Bank (January to March). The summer and autumn months (June to November) offer the warmest water temperatures, reaching up to 29°C, and generally calmer seas on the north coast, although this is also the Atlantic hurricane season. The south coast (Bayahibe/Santo Domingo) remains relatively sheltered and diveable throughout the year. Water temperatures range from a comfortable 26°C in February to 29°C in September, making a 3mm wetsuit sufficient for most divers, though a 5mm may be preferred for cave diving or multiple-dive days.
Planning Tips
Many regions are seasonally dependent. For The Dominican Republic, the best diving conditions are usually spread across different months depending on the archipelago or coast.
