Gizo, the lively capital of the Western Province, sits among a scatter of islands and reefs that deliver the Solomon Islands' most celebrated shark action and some of its finest wreck dives. The 140 m Toa Maru transport lies on its side in 20 to 40 m, a colossal, intact time capsule of WWII cargo. Just offshore, Grand Central Station is a legendary baited pinnacle where dozens of grey reef and silvertip sharks swirl with giant trevally and napoleon wrasse. Calmer sites like Kennedy Island and JFK Reef offer gentle coral gardens and macro for training and photography, while Seal Point and the Ghizo South Wall drop into current-swept blue water. The region also remembers PT-109 and John F. Kennedy's odyssey, woven into the relaxed island-town vibe. With clear water, short boat rides and a wonderful mix of adrenaline and tranquillity, Gizo is a must for any Solomon Islands diver.

Getting There

Fly into Gizo (Nusatupe) Airport (GZO) via Munda or Honiara, then take the short boat transfer to Gizo town. Dive operators run boats to Grand Central Station, the Toa Maru and the surrounding reefs in 10 to 45 minutes, and nearby islands are linked by water taxi.
