About Haʻapai Group (Central Islands)

The Haʻapai Group is the quiet, low-lying centre of the Tongan archipelago, a scatter of coral atolls and raised limestone islands strung across a turquoise lagoon that sees only a fraction of the visitors of Vavaʻu. This is Tonga at its most pristine: shallow coral gardens of table acropora and giant clams, soft-coral-draped walls, limestone sea caves and seasonal manta and whale-shark encounters, all in water of extraordinary clarity. Lifuka and Foa provide the main access, with Pangai as the sleepy administrative hub, yet the best diving is on the outer reefs where barracuda, trevally, grey reef sharks and eagle rays gather. Haʻapai is also one of Tonga's prime humpback whale areas, and many operators combine reef dives with in-water whale encounters in season. For divers who prize solitude, healthy reefs and a genuine sense of remote exploration, Haʻapai is the soul of the Friendly Islands.

Getting There

Reach Haʻapai by domestic flight from Tongatapu or Vavaʻu to Salote Pilolevu Airport on Lifuka, then transfer to Pangai or a nearby resort. Most sites are reached by the operator's dive boat in 10 to 45 minutes, and the shallow lagoon sites can be reached from shore at high water. Whale-shark and manta sites are on the outer reef and need a boat.
