About Vavaʻu Group (Northern Islands – Cavern Capital)

Vavaʻu is the northern showpiece of Tonga, a drowned volcanic caldera whose labyrinth of channels, bommies and plunging walls has earned it the title of the kingdom's Cavern Capital. Sheltered inside the vast Neiafu harbour, divers step from a gentle boat ride straight into a world of cathedral caverns, submerged air-filled chambers, light-shaft tunnels and swim-through arches. The Cathedral, Mariner's Cave and Swallow's Cave are among the most photogenic sites in the South Pacific, while outside the lagoon the walls, pinnacles and passages deliver grey reef sharks, eagle rays, schooling jacks and seasonal mantas. Vavaʻu is also Tonga's premier humpback whale destination, with strictly snorkel-only in-water encounters from July to October. With calm, clear water, a friendly sailing town in Neiafu and dive sites for every level, Vavaʻu is the most complete diving experience in the country.

Getting There

Fly into Vavaʻu International Airport (VAV) at Lupepauʻu, a short drive from the harbour town of Neiafu, or arrive by inter-island ferry. Most sites launch from Neiafu wharf on dive boats in 10 to 40 minutes, and the sheltered lagoon caves are reachable even in brisk weather. Liveaboards and charter yachts also use Vavaʻu as a base for the wider northern group.
