Vung Tau is a seafood destination par excellence, with fishing boats supplying the town's restaurants and markets with an extraordinary variety of fresh catches daily. The night market and Front Beach area buzz with diners enjoying grilled lobster, king prawns, sea snails prepared multiple ways, and the regional speciality of Tiet Canh Tom (shrimp blood pudding). Vung Tau and the surrounding Ho Chi Minh City area represent Vietnam's most accessible diving destination, located just two hours from the country's largest city and international gateway. While not possessing the coral diversity of Con Dao or the wall diving of Nha Trang, the region offers a fascinating and unique diving experience characterised by productive macro life, historical wrecks, and the unusual brackish-water ecosystems of the Can Gio mangrove zone. Hon Ba Island near Vung Tau provides rocky reef diving with excellent macro opportunities including frogfish, seahorses, and blue-spotted stingrays on shallow reefs. The Vung Tau wrecks add a historical dimension, with the fragmentary remains of the SS Black River, a French colonial-era steamer resting at 18-22 metres, alongside several scuttled small vessels serving as artificial reefs with dense marine colonisation. The Can Gio mangrove area near Ho Chi Minh City offers a completely different diving experience in silty, nutrient-rich waters supporting unique brackish-water species found nowhere else on Vietnam's dive sites. These mangrove dives serve as excellent training environments and provide fascinating ecological insight into the Mekong Delta's transition zone. Dry season with the best visibility of 8-18 metres and calm seas. Water temperatures remain warm at 26-29 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Wet season with reduced visibility and rougher seas. Wreck diving remains possible but conditions are less comfortable. Can Gio mangrove diving is year-round.

Vung Tau is located approximately 125 kilometres southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, reachable by road in about two hours via the modern expressway. A high-speed hydrofoil ferry also operates from Ho Chi Minh City's Bach Dang wharf to Vung Tau, taking approximately 90 minutes along the Saigon River. Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam's busiest international gateway with connections worldwide. Once in Vung Tau, the compact town centre is easily navigated on foot or by motorbike. Dive sites are reached by speedboat from Vung Tau harbour, with travel times typically under 30 minutes for the main sites. Can Gio is accessed by road from Ho Chi Minh City, approximately one hour south, with dive departures from local jetties. The proximity to Ho Chi Minh City makes Vung Tau ideal for weekend diving trips, and several dive operators cater specifically to the expat diving community.
