Coral Wall (Hon Mun) – Nha Trang Dive Site
Site Overview
Coral Wall on Hon Mun Island is a biodiversity hotspot that showcases the extraordinary soft coral and invertebrate diversity protected within the Nha Trang Marine Park. The moderate wall formation descends from 6 to 20 metres, its entire surface blanketed in colourful soft corals, sea fans, sponges, and tunicates that create a living tapestry of underwater colour. Nudibranch diversity is exceptional, with multiple chromodoris species, phyllidia, and rare aeolids documented across the wall face by dedicated macro divers and researchers. Green and hawksbill turtles are frequent visitors, gliding gracefully along the wall to feed on the abundant sponge growth and occasionally resting on ledges. Flatworms display their vivid colour patterns on the wall surfaces, while small sea fans and black coral trees add structural complexity to the invertebrate gardens. The shallower sections at 6 to 10 metres feature bright hard corals and schooling reef fish that provide an excellent safety stop environment and snorkelling opportunity. The wall's orientation captures ambient light beautifully, making it one of Nha Trang's best sites for underwater photography combining wide-angle wallscapes with macro invertebrate portraits. The protected marine park status ensures the soft coral communities remain healthy and vibrant, representing some of the best-preserved wall ecosystems in Vietnam's coastal waters.
Dive Briefing
"Descend to the top of the wall at approximately 8 metres and orient along the wall face running roughly east to west. Begin your dive at the deeper end, descending to 18 to 20 metres where the largest soft coral colonies and sea fans are concentrated. Swim slowly along the wall face scanning for nudibranchs, which are abundant on the Dendronephthya soft coral branches and sponge surfaces. Hawksbill turtles are commonly encountered feeding on sponges at mid-wall depths of 12 to 18 metres. Examine the overhangs and ledges for resting moray eels, lobsters, and cryptic invertebrate species. Flatworms are visible on the wall surface displaying their striking colour patterns, particularly in the well-lit upper sections. As you ascend, the wall transitions from soft coral dominated to hard coral dominated communities, with increasing fish density and brighter ambient light. The 6 to 10 metre zone features excellent hard coral formations with schooling anthias and damselfish. Complete your safety stop at 5 metres along the shallow reef top, enjoying the vibrant coral garden before deploying your DSMB and ascending to the boat."

Safety & Hazards
- Wall contact risk with delicate soft coral and sponge communities requiring precise buoyancy control at all depths
- Fire coral on shallower wall sections requiring careful hand placement and awareness during photo composition
- Moderate boat traffic above requiring DSMB deployment and controlled ascent procedures
- Sea urchins on wall ledges requiring spatial awareness when approaching the reef structure closely
- Variable current direction between dives requiring flexible dive planning and entry point adjustment
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Coral Wall is ideal for Open Water certified divers with good buoyancy control who appreciate marine biodiversity and invertebrate life. The site is a paradise for macro photographers and nudibranch enthusiasts, offering species diversity that ranks among the best in Vietnam. Intermediate divers will appreciate the varied depth profile and the opportunity to practice wall diving skills in moderate conditions. The turtle encounters and soft coral scenery make it rewarding for all experience levels. The site is less depth-demanding than Secret Wall, making it accessible while still offering impressive marine life encounters.
