    Site Overview

Madonna Rock, also known as Hon Rom, is Nha Trang's most dramatic and adrenaline-charged dive site, an exposed rock pinnacle rising from the depths with spectacular swim-throughs and vertical walls that attract the largest pelagic species in the region. The pinnacle's isolated position in open water creates a cleaning station and aggregation point for barracuda schools, giant trevally, and the occasional napoleon wrasse that patrol the current lines around the formation. Whitetip reef sharks rest in the deeper crevices and swim-through passages, while large moray eels occupy nearly every suitable cavity in the rock structure. The swim-throughs are the site's signature feature, natural tunnels carved through the rock that allow divers to pass through the pinnacle's interior while shafts of light penetrate from above creating dramatic visual effects. The rock surface is encrusted with colourful sponges, gorgonians, and soft corals that thrive in the strong current flow delivering constant nutrients. The summit at 5 metres offers a stunning safety stop environment with schooling fish and bright ambient light. Madonna Rock is dived only during the dry season when sea conditions allow safe access to this exposed offshore site, and it represents the pinnacle of Nha Trang diving for experienced divers seeking big animal encounters, dramatic topography, and the thrill of exposed pinnacle diving.

    Dive Briefing

"Descend from the dive boat onto the pinnacle summit at approximately 5 to 8 metres, immediately orienting to the current direction and the main rock formation. Descend along the wall face to explore the swim-through passages at depths of 12 to 22 metres, using your torch to illuminate the interior tunnels and check for resting whitetip reef sharks and moray eels. The swim-throughs vary in size from narrow passages requiring single-file navigation to large tunnels allowing comfortable passage. Barracuda schools concentrate on the upcurrent side of the pinnacle, often numbering fifty or more individuals forming silvery curtains in the water column. Giant trevally patrol the open water above the formation, occasionally diving into the fish aggregations. Napoleon wrasse are encountered cruising along the wall face, particularly in the mid-depth sections at 15 to 22 metres. Circle the pinnacle exploring different faces and depth zones, noting the changing current intensity and marine life communities. Ascend gradually to the summit for your safety stop at 5 metres, where schooling fish and bright light create a memorable conclusion. Deploy your DSMB well before surfacing, as the exposed position requires the boat to track your location carefully."
