Napoleon Barge – Nha Trang Wreck Dive

Site Overview

The Napoleon Barge is a sunken cargo barge resting upright on a sandy bottom at depths of 15 to 20 metres in Nha Trang Bay, serving as one of the region's most established artificial reef dive sites. The barge has been submerged long enough for extensive marine colonisation to transform the industrial vessel into a thriving underwater ecosystem. Large groupers have claimed the barge hold and interior spaces as their territory, with several impressive specimens exceeding one metre in length regularly observed by visiting divers. Moray eels occupy every suitable crevice in the deteriorating hull structure, while lionfish have colonised the exterior surfaces in remarkable numbers, creating a dense predator population around the artificial reef. Batfish patrol the upper structure and surrounding waters, and scorpionfish camouflage on the encrusted deck surfaces. The barge's relatively open design compared to enclosed shipwrecks allows more light penetration and easier navigation, making it an accessible wreck diving experience for Advanced certified divers without specialised wreck training. The site demonstrates the ecological value of artificial reefs, with fish biomass and diversity significantly higher than the surrounding sandy bottom. While not as dramatic as purpose-sunk wreck diving destinations, the Napoleon Barge offers a genuine historical wreck experience with productive marine life encounters at comfortable depths in the heart of Nha Trang's diving area.
