Site Overview

Sandy Beach on Hon Mun Island offers a fascinating contrast to Nha Trang's more colourful coral reef sites, providing exceptional muck and macro diving opportunities on a sloping sandy substrate interspersed with coral bommies and rocky outcrops. The site's depth range of 5 to 18 metres creates diverse habitat zones, from the shallow reef edge with hard coral formations to the deeper sandy slopes where unusual bottom-dwelling species thrive. Pipefish are regularly encountered gliding through the seagrass and rubble zones, while patient observation reveals well-camouflaged frogfish in various colours hiding among the sandy debris. Cuttlefish hunt actively across the sand flats, displaying their remarkable colour-changing abilities as they stalk small crustacean prey. Bluespotted stingrays rest on the open sand, and garden eel colonies create fascinating fields of swaying heads emerging from their burrows. The transitions between substrate types create ecological edges that concentrate biodiversity, making Sandy Beach a favourite site for underwater photographers specialising in macro and muck diving. The protected location within the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area ensures healthy populations of species that have declined at less-managed sites. Water temperatures remain consistently warm at 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, and visibility ranges from 8 to 20 metres depending on the season.
