Site Overview

Whale Island is Nha Trang's most remote and pristine diving destination, an isolated island outpost approximately 80 kilometres north of the city that offers some of the finest coral reef diving in Vietnam. The island's distance from mainland sediment sources and fishing pressure has preserved extraordinary coral health, with extensive staghorn coral formations, massive table corals, and diverse soft coral communities that rival the best reefs in Southeast Asia. Green and hawksbill turtles are encountered on nearly every dive, feeding on the healthy reef and resting on sandy patches in the island's sheltered bay. The site's greatest claim to fame is its seasonal megafauna encounters: whale sharks visit the island's nutrient-rich waters from May to August, feeding on plankton blooms in the open water, while manta rays glide through from December to March attracted by the productive cleaning stations around the reef. Even without megafauna sightings, Whale Island delivers outstanding reef diving with diverse fish communities, pristine coral gardens, and the sense of exploring a truly remote and unspoiled marine environment.
