Site Overview

Futuna Bays & Caves covers the scattered limestone caverns and overhangs along the north-east coast of Futuna, near the village of Leava, a part of the territory that is completely undocumented for recreational diving. The bays are sheltered and the limestone has been hollowed by the sea into caverns and swim-throughs that glow with glassfish and flashlight fish after dark, while spiny lobsters, moray eels, soldierfish and nudibranchs hide in the crevices. Depths are modest, reaching about 28 m with an average near 14 m, and visibility in the open bays can exceed 35 m in the dry season, though it drops quickly inside the confined spaces. The site is a true frontier: there are no maps, no dive centre and no records of recreational dives here, so it must be treated as an overhead-environment dive for appropriately trained cavern or cave divers. Access is by private boat from Leava, and the reward is a glimpse of a marine environment almost no diver has ever seen - the quiet, mysterious macro heart of the Futuna & Alofi - Volcanic Walls & Seamounts region. With no map, no dive centre and no record of any recreational dive, the bays are a true frontier where careful, trained exploration can still reveal a marine environment almost no diver has ever witnessed.

"The dive at Futuna Bays & Caves begins with a skipper briefing on the coastline and a conservative plan, because the limestone caverns near Leava are entirely undocumented for recreational diving. The boat sets up in a sheltered bay and the group enters together, dropping to the reef at around 14 m and finning toward the first overhang. Outside, glassfish and soldierfish shimmer in the light, while inside the caverns flashlight fish and lobsters lurk in the dark, best seen with powerful primary and backup lights. The maximum depth reaches about 28 m while the average sits near 14 m, so gas is managed on the rule of thirds and the group stays within the light zone. Current in the bays is mild, but silt can reduce visibility instantly, so finning is slow and controlled and a line reel is carried for any penetration. The safety stop is completed in open water on a surface marker. Because there is no dive centre and no site history, all navigation, gas and emergency planning are self-provided, and the caves are best dived from May to October in calm conditions by trained cavern or cave divers."
