The southern district of the territory, Futuna and the uninhabited island of Alofi, is the wildest and least-dived part of Wallis and Futuna. Both islands are rugged volcanic peaks ringed by sheer underwater drop-offs, black-coral forests and seamounts that plunge into the deep blue of the Pacific. Futuna's north coast at Pointe Vele offers a steep volcanic wall smothered in gorgonians, with grey reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, wahoo and the occasional oceanic whitetip in strong current. The south shore around Sigave is calmer, with hard-coral gardens, green and hawksbill turtles, napoleon wrasse and nudibranchs tended by local spear-fishermen but otherwise pristine. Alofi, entirely uninhabited, is surrounded by walls descending hundreds of metres with extraordinary black-coral forests, huge schools of big-eye trevally, barracuda, silvertip sharks and the potential for hammerheads - easily one of the wildest wall dives in the Pacific. The channel between the two islands, Alofi Passage, is a powerful drift highway for tuna, mackerel, marlin and possibly manta rays. With no infrastructure and no dive centres, this is pure expedition territory, visited only by private yachts and the rare scientific or exploratory liveaboard.

Getting There

Fly into Pointe Vele Airport (FUT) on Futuna from Wallis with Aircalin, or arrive by private yacht. Alofi is reached only by local boat from Futuna. All dive sites require a private vessel capable of handling open-ocean swell, and there are no dive centres, so gear, compressor and surface support must be self-provided. Access to the walls is weather-dependent.
