Site Overview

Futuna South Reef, off the Sigave district on the sheltered south shore of Futuna, is the calmer counterpart to the island's dramatic walls and one of the most pristine coral gardens in the territory. The slopes here are gentle, descending to about 30 m with an average near 16 m, and they are clothed in healthy hard corals that host green and hawksbill turtles, napoleon wrasse, moray eels and a wealth of nudibranchs. Depths and mild current make the site suitable for confident Open Water divers, and visibility can stretch past 40 m in the dry season. The reef is used occasionally by local spear-fishermen but is otherwise untouched, so the fish life is abundant and completely unaccustomed to people. Volcanic rock underlies the coral, giving the slopes an uneven, rugged character that shelters macro life in every crevice. Access is by private boat from Vele or Leava, and with no dive centre the reef remains pristine. Dive Briefing

"The dive at Futuna South Reef begins with a short private-boat transfer from Vele or Leava to a calm section of the south shore, where the skipper picks a slope away from any fishing activity. Descending to the volcanic substrate at around 16 m, divers follow the reef as it undulates gently downward, surrounded by green and hawksbill turtles, napoleon wrasse and moray eels among the hard corals. The maximum depth reaches about 30 m while the average sits near 16 m, so this is a relaxed profile ideal for intermediate divers and macro photographers. Current is usually mild, and the guide keeps the group close to protect the fragile coral and to avoid silting the uneven substrate. A torch reveals nudibranchs and small crabs in the crevices, and a slow safety stop is completed on the surface marker near the boat. Because there is no dive centre, all gas and emergency planning are self-provided; the site is best dived from May to October when the south shore is calmest, and a relaxed, well-buoyed dive rewards the patient eye with abundant turtle and macro life."
