Carinthia, in Austria’s sunny south, is the country’s warmest and most dive-diverse lake region. The Wörthersee, Austria’s warmest large lake, is a wreck diver’s playground with a sunken DC-3 / C-47 fuselage, small aircraft, wooden wrecks and abundant pike and carp, while Millstätter See offers deep, very clear walls and a small sunken chapel. The high, luminous Weissensee is an ice-diving mecca hosting the world’s largest ice-diving festival, and the smaller lakes - Ossiacher See, Faaker See, Keutschacher See, Afritzer See, Pressegger See and Klopeiner See - provide everything from macro sponges to warm, shallow beginner havens. Carinthia combines Mediterranean-style lakeside leisure with serious freshwater diving, all wrapped in a Slovenian-influenced food culture and a climate warm enough to dive in lighter suits for much of the summer.

Getting There

Fly into Klagenfurt Airport (KLU), the regional hub, or Ljubljana (LJU) and Vienna (VIE). A rental car is the easiest way to tour the lakes; the main lakes are also served by regional trains and Postbus.
