Scuba Diving Regions in Japan
From world-class walls to muck diving havens, discover the unique character of each regional cluster.
Regional Diversity
Due to its vast latitudinal range, the best time to dive in Japan depends entirely on the region. For the subtropical Okinawa islands, the peak season is from May to October when the water is warmest and visibility is excellent. The hammerhead shark season in Yonaguni peaks between December and April. For the Izu Peninsula and central Japan, the late summer and autumn (July to November) offer the best conditions. Ice diving in Hokkaido is only possible during the peak of winter in February and March. Japan is a year-round diving destination if you are willing to travel to the right region for the season.
Planning Tips
Many regions are seasonally dependent. For Japan, the best diving conditions are usually spread across different months depending on the archipelago or coast.
